Emily McElmurry was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in Texas.  She
earned her BA from the University of New Mexico and completed her MA
at Eastern Virginia Medical School with a degree in Art Therapy.  After
living away from Texas for over 10 years she returned to start a family.  Emily
has exhibited work all over the country including New Mexico, Virginia and
Texas.  As a painter, Emily has created artwork to be displayed at a major
university, corporate offices, and commissioned pieces displayed in private
homes.

Emily’s work can be described as organic non-representational expressionism.
“I paint from remembered feelings, and flashes of inspirations that come to
me.”   The use of color, texture and space are paramount.  Emily enjoys
painting large canvases and applying heavy textural effects.  This encourages
the viewer to participate directly with the painting.   At times the paint is
applied in flat washes of color leaving the viewer with a sense of calm, while
other times the heavy application of paint with broad brush strokes denotes
the energetic handling and deliberate application of paint.  You will find zips
and curls of color throughout her works. Paint is applied directly to the edge
of the canvas which allows for the canvas to be viewed edge to edge without
the confines of a frame.  The abstract presentation of images, are often
organic in quality and hints of nature through the use of color and form are
easily surmised.  The intent of her art is an expression of spiritual or emotional
content and a connection with nature; however, much is left to the viewer and
their personal experience with the canvas.
